Early Philadelphia Jurist Collection. A unique early Philadelphia jurist collection consisting of original 18th and early 19th century prominent Philadelphia jurist letters, plus a large collection of etchings and engravings of the persons represented in these letters, plus the original pages from a book by Horace Binney entitled The Leaders of the Old Bar of Philadelphia (Philadelphia: Sherman & Son, 1859). The collection also includes a statement that the pages of the book--(8¼ x 5¼ in. inlaid to 15½ x 12¼ sheets) was a presentation copy autographed on the front cover page by Horace Binney to Dr. Joseph Carson, the father of Hampton L. Carson, who put this collection of documents, engravings together with the book presentation.

The collection consists of the actual, original letters which were used as source material in the printing of the book. This includes approximately 50 autograph letters and documents signed by famous Pennsylvania 18th - 19th century jurists such as Horace Binney, A.J. Dallas, Thomas Dawes, Jr., Samuel Dexter, Thomos Duncan, Jared Ingersoll, Charles Pettit, Albert Rosenthall, Edward and William Tilghman, and Bushrod Washington. Also included is a substantial collection of original engravings and portraits of the gentlemen named in the book. Further represented are outstanding portraits of Edward Shippin (Chief Justice of Pennsylvania), William Rawle (descendant of the Rawle family who arrived with William Penn in 1682), and Albert Gallatin (first Treasurer of the United States). Also, a wonderful 12 x 8½ in. 18th century portrait engraving of Pennsylvania Governor Thomas McKean, engraved by David Edwin from an original picture by Gilbert Stuart.

This outstanding and certainly unique collection deserves the attention of anyone interested in the history of law during the Federal Period of our country. Serious inspection is recommended.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.
