Turner, J. M. W (1775-1851) British landscape painter. Autograph Letter Signed, Athenaeum, no date (Saturday Evng), 1 pg, 7 x 4½. To Miss Rogers, "Best regards to you and Miss Johnston and glad to say I am more fortunate this time and will have the great pleasure of being in Hanover Terrace on Thursday the 11th at ½ past 6. Yours most truly J M W Turner." Light toning; minor mounting remnants on verso of blank integral leaf. Turner was possibly the greatest landscapist of the 19th century. In the period of his first style (1800-20), he introduced historical and mythological subjects into his paintings, e.g., " Snowstorm: Hannibal and His Army Crossing the Alps." In his second period (1820-35), he used idealized scenery and showed a heightened scale of color, e.g., "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage." During his third period (1835-45), he conveyed his impressions of nature with more poetic and dreamlike effects and even more brilliant color and light, e.g., "The Sun of Venice Going to Sea." He exhibited for the last time in 1850. He also produced engravings and thousands of watercolor sketches and drawings.
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,600.
