Lot 332

Long, Huey P (189301935) Governor of Louisiana; U.S. Senator; nicknamed "The Kingfish"; assassinated. An important lot of four items from the Louisiana politician known for his demagoguery and his "Share the Wealth" plan whose motto was "Every Man A King." (1) Typed Letter Signed on U.S. Senate letterhead, New Orleans, August 16, 1932, 1 pg. quarto. To Robert Jackson of the Democratic Speakers Bureau, explaining why he cannot speak on behalf of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Democratic presidential nominee. In part: "…It rather appears to me from what I have been reading, as to the reliability of which I am not in position to judge, that the campaign is being given a trend on lines that would not be consistent with my attitude and stand in this country. In order to be a real good, loyal Democrat and aid the party all that I can, as such is the condition, it would be better that I be forgotten as a campaign speaker for the party. I am so sincerely set for the proposition that the rich and powerful must be scaled from their privilege and control over the finances of the country and our resources that along any other line I would be worthless." Long adds a holograph note, "cc / Franklin D. Roosevelt / Albany, NY." Very Good. (2) A carbon copy of Jackson's August 24th typed response to Long, assuring him that "…our position on political matters is being consistently misrepresented by a hostile Republican press," and adding, "I can personally say to you that you and Governor Roosevelt have the same objective in mind….You have the fastest mind in the Democratic Party and I want to see that mentality used for the benefit of our campaign……" More excellent content. Very Good. (3) 10 x 8 in black and white Photograph Signed, "Huey P. Long / U.S. Senate" in the lower border. Fine. (4) A mint 21 x 11 in. printed broadside of Long's "Share Our Wealth Society." (4 items).
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
