Lot 2768

1896-S. NGC graded MS-67 Prooflike. One of the most important 1896-S Morgan Dollars ever to cross the auction block and certainly the finest Deep Mirror Prooflike example ever to appear on the market. This remarkable coin is well struck, with Prooflike surfaces on both sides and extremely light die polishing lines indicating a fresh re-surfacing of the dies. Completely original and fully deserving of the lofty MS-67 grade. Faint golden toning on both the obverse and the reverse -- not enough to diminish the cartwheel brilliance and just enough to confirm the original status of the surfaces. A fabulous coin that is sure to set a record for the date.

As stated earlier, this is the only MS-67 1896-S DMPL graded by either NGC or PCGS. In fact, PCGS has yet to certify a DMPL example of this date. NGC has graded only two other DMPL's: one in MS-62 and one in MS-63. Consider this: 5,000,000 1896-S Silver Dollars were struck, yet this singular beauty remains as the ultimate example of the date. While most people are fighting over scraps in the modern Registry Sets, here's a chance to own the finest example of the date…not by one point, but by FOUR! Estimated Value $75,000 - 100,000
