Lot 1552

1866 Rays. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice, bright example with a satiny obverse and a semi-Prooflike reverse. Typical soft strike on the reverse stars. This was the first year of the new Shield Nickel type, with rays of the sun inserted between the stars on the reverse. The rays created all kinds of difficulties when the coins were struck, making it difficult to squeeze the metal into the deepest recesses of the dies. Increasing the striking pressure only shortened the life of the dies, which cracked even under normal pressures. Thus, in 1867, the rays were removed, resolving some of those issues (PCGS # 3790) Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,700

Realized $2,185
