August 8, 1768, The New-York and Weekly Gazette; The Mercury. 4 pages folio. Page 3 reports from Boston that in London "…our Friends consider the late act imposing Duties upon Paper, &c., as a second Stamp Act, and as another Attempt to gain the Point of Taxation over the Colonies…That…determining not to import any Goods from Great Britain, would undoubedly and inevitably procure for us all the Relief we need…." Page 4 has a proclamation signed in print by William Franklin as Governor of New Jersey. Also, ads for runaways include "a Negro Man named Harry…can speak both Dutch and English, plays on the Violin, and loves Grog…." Attractive woodcut masthead pictures an Indian and a colonist holding a crown between them. Overall toning; a few areas of foxing. About Fine.
