To Reverend Strickland in Des Moines, Iowa, stating: "A residence of now nearly twelve years in Europe has served to impress deeply upon my mind the conviction that the poorest and most unfortunate inhabitant of the United States should consider himself lucky in not being an European subject." Very Fine. Familiar rhetoric today.
