Lot 1356

1855 Kellogg & Co. (San Francisco) $50 Gold. The complete set of 4 different dates. These were struck in San Francisco in 2001, each with a stamp on the reverse above the eagle showing the exact day struck. The dates include: August 26, September 3, September 7 and September 12. These huge gold coins were struck from transfer dies made from the original 1855 Kellogg and Company dies. The planchets were made from original Kelogg and Humbert assayers gold ingots recovered from the S.S. Central America treasure. Only 493 uncirculated examples were struck

Each coin exhibits the most amazing mint blast luster imaginable. The four dates, from which the uncirculated examples were struck, represent four most important dates of the treasure voyage:

August 26th. Treasure aboard the S.S. Sonora is at sea on the Pacific Ocean en route to Panama
September 3rd. Arrival at Panama City riding the Panama Railroad overland going aboard the S.S. Central America
September 7th. Arrive in Havana and spent overnight in Havana Harbor
September 12th. The S.S. Cenral America is lost and sinks to the bottom of the sea

Each is housed in a custom hand-hammered copper frame with gold imprinted purple ribbons -- modeled after the San Francisco Jewelers Shreve & Co., for the famous 1915-S Panama-Pacific commemorative coins, and each is housed in a custom box.

Retail sales of $12,000-$15,000 for this set.
Estimated Value $9,500 - 10,500.
