1838-D $5 Classic Head. SEGS graded MS-64. A beautifully struck, glittering gold example of the only D-mintmarked Classic Head $5. This is the finest example graded by any service. The best reported by PCGS is a single MS-63; the best at NGC is a single MS-63. In the Significant Auction Records compiled by Jeff Garrett and John Dannreuther for the period from 1997 to 2001, none of the MS-63 examples appeared on the market. MS-62 graded examples appeared 5 times, bringing from $20,700 to $40,250. Bidding for this beauty should be fierce.
