Lot 636

1882 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo. A rare, Proof-only date with an entire mintage consisting of a mere 1,097 coins. This is one of the finest survivors -- PCGS reports 3 in this grade and only 1 finer. This example is pure white, without a trace of color on either side, allowing the full effect of the cameo contrast to be viewed and enjoyed. The surfaces are completely mark-free. Powerful eye appeal for the power collector. No circulation strikes were made of the 1879-1883 Trade Dollars because the Trade Dollar was supplanted by the Morgan Dollar beginning in 1878. Nevertheless, Proofs of those years were included in annual Proof Sets, or offered for sale individually. The 1884 may have been a legitimate Proof date (die books of the period indicate that dies were made for 1884 Trade Dollars); the 1885 is believed to be a clandestine (but highly desired) issue.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

Realized $11,788
