1881 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Ultra Cameo. A dazzling example of this rare, Proof-only date, here in a nearly pure white version. Impeccable surfaces and wonderful eye appeal. NGC reports only 1 example in this grade and only 1 finer. Thus, the chances of upgrading this piece are extremely low and the cost would be extremely high in relation. "Ultra" refers to the extreme contrast between the devices and the fields, but it really means "ultimate" in terms of rarity and desirability. Ultra Cameos were the first coins struck from fresh dies. As more and more coins were struck, the frosting wore off by the polishing effect of the metal of the planchets squeezing against the metal of the dies. If enough coins were struck, the dies would eventually become completely brilliant, or nearly so. Thus, Ultra Cameo Proofs, by their very nature, are extremely rare.
