Lot 1638

1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 2 over 1. NGC graded MS-66. A phenomenal coin in all areas -- strike, surface quality, luster, and eye appeal. Let's start with the first aspect -- strike. Every fine detail in Liberty's hair is crisply defined, as are all of the eagle's feathers and the lines in the shields. The only weak spot on this coin is the first through the third stars, and even they are not bad. Surface quality is impressive -- the wide open fields are unbroken by marks and Liberty's vulnerable cheek is unharmed. The luster?…nice, soft and even…stretching from rim to rim. Finally, the best part of this coin, the eye appeal, brought to new heights by a silky blend of silver-gold pastels surrounded by sea-green and steel-blue iridescence. Whether you're a date, type, or variety collector, this coin is sure to please. Tied with one other coin for the lofty title of finest NGC graded 1822/1 Half Dollar.
Estimated Value $16,000 - 19,000.
