Lot 1632

1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. Pointed 6, stem not through claw. NGC graded MS-64. This remarkable coin has some of the prettiest toning you'll ever see on a Draped Bust Half Dollar, or any early American type, for that matter. Plus, the toning is equally impressive on both sides, not just one. Boldly struck from worn dies, such that the centers are sharp but the details weaken at the peripheries, with some of the stars and letters deforming and stretching into the denticles. This late state also shows the die crack at star 12, labeled R-5 (Rare) by Overton. This may, in fact, be the finest example known of the sub-variety -- if not, we're sure it's the loveliest! For the entire date, NGC has graded only 18 at this level, 3 in MS-65, and only 1 in MS-66.
Estimated Value $22,000 - 25,000.
