Ellington, Duke. Holograph note to call " Al Celley, Room 724", at the Beverly Plaza Hotel-- SUI- 3566, on top of page in pencil. (1899- 1974) Famous composer, arranger, bandleader and pianist. Acheived early success with "Black and Tan Fantasy", " Mood Indigo", and " Take the A Train".

Typed Letter Signed One page, quarto. June 12, 1956, New York, NY. A business agreement addressed to the American Broadcast Company office in San Francisco.

The document reads as follows: " Gentlemen: I agree to furnish services, and/or materials to you subject only to your operating polices and general supervision.
I will not obligate you in any way and I will be responsible for all payments required in carrying out my agreement including tax payments.
I hereby agree to indemnify and hold you harmless from any claims, loss or damage of whatsoever nature (including attorneys' fees) which you may suffer by reason of my being held not an independent contractor. / Yours very truly."
It is signed boldly in pencil.

Includes social security number (114-02-4205) and permanent address (1619 Broadway, New York, NY).
