Lot 274

(Charles V and Juana). Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain as Charles I; and his mother, the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, who had ruled as Queen with King Philip I.

Manuscript Document in their names, 19 pages on velum, with extensive illumination on the first page, bound in stamped and gold-tooled brown calf, small folio, Valladolid, December 20, 1548.

The document, written in an accomplished hand, is a royal confirmation of nobility, which could confer exemption from certain taxes, for Juan de Angulo of El Cubo. It was issued as the result of an attempt by the authorities of El Cubo to levy taxes on Angulo, an attempt which he successfully contested before the royal courts at Valladolid, with details of the case recorded here. The document is signed on the final page by three "licendiados" and endorsed by a notary. On paper flyleaves at the beginning, there are two pages of (seventeenth) century notes concerning descendants of Angulo. The extremely attractive title page consists primarily of illumination, with a large depiction in full color of Angulo's coat of arms, as well as wide painted borders of foliage, fruit, and mythological figures. On the subsequent pages are ten illuminated capital letters. The document is about Fine, with some wear.

Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,750.
