Catherine The Great. Catherine kept those around her well paid, while ignoring the plight of the peasants. Empress (Czarina) of Russia as Catherine II for 34 years after she murdered her husband, Peter III in 1762. She extended the frontiers of the Russian Empire through numerous conquests, especially notable victories over the Turks, from whom she annexed Crimea. Although known for her promiscuity and many lovers, she was an intelligent and learned woman who regularly corresponded with Voltaire and other leading philosophers of her day.

Document Signed "Ekaterina" in Cyrillic, one page, small folio, St. Petersburg, Sept. 9, 1766 headed "Imperial Decree to OUR Court Office".

This document approves an agreement between Coloned Maria Poltaratskiy with teacher Foma Busket, orders the teacher's salary produced from revenues of Catherine's personal patrimony.
