Truman, Harry S. Both documents are in Fine condition. Few of these important and colorful awards were given out. Among the other recipients of this prestigious award was Chiang Kai-shek. 33rd President of the United States,1945-1953.

Two Documents Signed as President. A Legion of Merit Award to the Free French Surgeon General During World War II that harks back to the days of George Washington. An accompanying document, a citation on White House letterhead describes the doctor's service throughout the struggles to liberate France and then to care for the victims of Nazism. The two documents:

A. One page, small folio, Aug. 17, 1945, awarding the Legion of Merit, Degree of Officer, to Surgeon General Arthus Guirriec of the First French Army, "For extraordinary fidelity and exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service… in accordance with the order issued by General Washington at Headquarters, Newburg, New York, August 7, 1782… "With a colorful embossed facsimile of the medal at the top, in red, white, blue, green, and gold; and with the embossed seal of the War Department at the bottom. Countersigned by Secretary of War Henry Stimson.


B. One page, Quarto on White House letterhead, also signed by Truman as President, is a "Citation for the Legion of Merit," giving details of Guirriec's service: "… From the moment of the landings in southern France to the conclusion of hostilities in Austria, he devoted his exceptional professional skill and his wholehearted enthusiasm to the difficult problem attendant upon organizing the medical services to treat the sick and wounded, and to carry out evacuation during fast-moving and rigorous campaigns. Supsequently, he played a splendid and humane role in caring for the victims of Nazi oppression as the enemy was rolled back. He was a distinguished representative of a noble profession whose sole motivating force is the desire to bring help to those in misery."
