Sale 2

Lot 1557

1934 Washington 25c. NGC graded MS-64. DDO. FS-009. This is one of the most distinctive doubled dies, with all the legends of the obverse clearly showing twice. Long known, too. Listed in the Red Book and given valuations. Apparently fewer than a thousand are known to exist (after all these years of frantic searching!), most of them being circulated. This example is one of the very finest to be had. Only a few ticks exist on George Washington's cheek, neck and ponytail. All obviously occurred at the mint or at the time of distribution, for the surfaces appear undipped, with original brilliance enhanced by a delicate pastel lilac iridescence. If dipped, its luster would be blazing! It is the cataloguer's opinion that this coin emerged from an old Pennsylvania estate some five years ago, where it had been held since the year of issue.
