Lot 1553

A lovely J-1605 Pattern Silver Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Judd-1605. Rarity-7. Pattern Silver Dollar. Reeded Edge. Liberty has a coiled hair bun, looking very similar to the "Washlady" style. Deeply frosted on the devices, with hazy mirror fields contrasting. Untoned and perfect for the grade. Fully struck, and one of only 3 graded by PCGS, one a Proof 60, this coin, then one coin a notch higher. Perhaps half a dozen in all grades, this certainly in the top couple of those that survive. Designed by William Barber, the head of Liberty faces left with hair gathered in a coil and held by a ribbon behind her head. Similar to the design used on the coiled hair Stellas. The reverse has an eagle with raised wings holding an olive branch with six leaves in the right talon and three long, slender arrows which pass behind the wing in the left, partially surrounded by two crossed branches of laurel tied with ribbon at the bottom. E PLURIBUS UNUM in field above.
Silver Dollar patterns are always difficult to find in choice or gem condition, and are especially popular with collectors. Many new designs were executed in limited numbers, and no doubt Congress had a hard time choosing one design over the many others offered.
