Lot 1238

Gem 1797 Quarter! NGC graded MS-65. Some adjustments across Liberty's bust, just barely reaching her face, and the eagle's head and the leaves above it are soft, as usually seen. Otherwise, the denticles are crisp, the circle of stars are quite sharp, and Liberty's portrait is well defined. The toning is very old, a deep blue with dark amber mixed appealingly on both sides. It's the kind of coin, in the old days, that one would leap at, for it would stand out, possibly in an old velvet tray, from which it acquired some of its color. While some of us may pine for those bygone days, when you could just pick up this beauty and feel its significance, today of course the plastic slab protects it and makes it, in a way, easier to appreciate it. Certainly there are very few to equal this piece. Population: PCGS 1 MS65, 1 MS66, 1 MS67. NGC 2 MS65, 2 MS66, 1 MS67. Pretty much places this in the Condition Census, among those graded. Designers Scot and Eckstein would be most pleased to see their "Liberty quarter" so well cared for, all these years later.
