Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 2

Lot 1178

1821. Sharpness of AU-55 but edge apparently damaged. Small Date. JR-9, Rarity-2. From the J.J. Pittman Collection sale (October 1997, Lot 551), where it was described thus: "Choice Almost Uncirculated … sharply struck and well centered with beautiful multicolored russet, greenish-gold and blue toning." All true. However, evidently the cataloguer missed what seems to be a repair on the edge below the date area. It's possible that this occurred at the mint, that it was caused by a faulty collar, but the rim also appears slightly trimmed. The toning at this area is so ancient that it's difficult to tell for sure. Examine it yourself, and bid accordingly. The surface images are beautiful nonetheless.

Realized $368
