[print] Europa and The Bull. From a painting by Francesco Albani, engraved by Jacobus Freij. 21 x 16". Image: 17½ x 13¾". In the tale as related by Ovid, the god Zeus, in love with Europa, turned himself into a bull with golden horns to thwart her bodyguards. Enticing Europa into taking a ride on his back, her took her across the sea to Crete. The constellation Taurus is said to portray this event, with only the front quarters of the bull visible because his hindquarters are submerged as he takes the lovely Europa into the water.
Skillful paper repairs verso to right, upper and lower margins; one small spot of repair at upper left corner; scattered tears to margin to not interfere with text or image; edge separation at top and bottom center extend into plate but not image; areas of thinned paper at top margin; surface soil; pencil ID verso; ½" piece of tape at top margin. A quote from Ovid's Metamorpheses (in Latin) graces the margin. Gorgeous color. Good condition.
