Lot 2166

Hemisphaerium Coeli Australe / Dopplemajero. C. 1740. Nürnberg. 22 x 19". Published with Homann, this large celestial chart depicts the constellations of the southern sky. Cherubs hold beautifully detailed scientific instruments in each corner: a sextant, an azimuth circle, a pendulum clock and a telescope.
Likely original color, with the exception of the touch-up.
Trimmed almost to plate mark. Old repairs: strengthening strip along centerfold reinforced with archival tape; one paper repair with color touch-up at bottom edge. Apparent abrasion at Centaur's shoulder; mounting tape residue verso; minor foxing/toning at edges; very minor "crumpling" at two corners; small pencil Ids verso. Green color has interesting variations as it extends from center of map.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.
