Lot 1963

Al. G. Barnes Wild Animal Circus. [c.1930s], 28 x 21 in. Lithograph. Central Ptg. & Illinois Litho Co., Chicago, USA. Featuring renowned tiger trainer Mabel Stark, dressed in her trademark white leather, and eight big cats. The artist's name, Frank Hoban, is at lower right. Condition: Professionally restored to A-. Al G. Barnes Circus was in business from 1906-1938. Barnes was very successful, building his circus up to a thirty-car railroad operation. In 1929, Barnes (who died in 1931) sold out to the American Circus Corporation, which included the Barnes circus with others sold to John Ringling that same year. Mabel Stark started and ended her career as a wild animal trainer with Al G. Barnes. During the 1910s and 1920s, she was one of the greatest stars of the Ringling Brothers Circus; her act was the center-ring finale.
