Lot 1231

Columbian World's Fair, Chicago, 1892-1893. Group of Three Medals, in Aluminum, White Metal, and Bronze. The largest, in white metal, is an Italian production for distribution at the Fair. The obverse has Columbus standing at the tiller of his ship, his hand being held by the personification of luck and discovery, who points the way. The reverse with American eagle, a view of the Administration Building, and elaborate cartouche commemorating the event. The other two pieces are identical issues, American made, just in differing metal. Each with fine portrait of Italy's famous son, and elaborate allegorical scene on back. On a terraced vista Columbia sits with shield at side, and gazes out to three tiny ships in the distance. Liberty, with Indian feathers, points to the ships. Below, an aerial view of the fair, with Italianate buildings, and ships upon the river. Some trivial wear evident on the bronze, the other two pieces quite pristine. Diameters: 50 mm., 64 mm. Lot of 3.
Estimated Value $100 - 200.
