Lot 1211

Columbian World's Fair, Chicago, 1892-1893. Lot of Three Columbus & Civilization Medals. First, an ultra-high relief medal in silver or white metal. This allegorical masterpiece has a portrait of the aging explorer; flanking is a half-naked Indian maiden, who reaches above and across to grasp the hand of a demurely-clad goddess of civilization. The reverse shows a winged divinity, bringing the gifts of prosperity, commerce, and enlightenment to the cowering natives at the lower right. In the far background, a nimbus of radiance emanates from the Capitol building in Washington. Finely preserved, with faint toning and proof-like fields. Diameter: 58 mm. In custom plastic frame. In addition, is another example, but in bronze and smaller. The third, in white metal, has the same allegorical reverse, but simpler obverse, with closely similar Columbus portrait. Diameters: 59 mm. Both superbly preserved, although the second shows a few minor abrasions. Lot of 3.
Estimated Value $125 - 175.
