Lot 2045

$5 Liberty. 1890-CC. PCGS graded MS-64. As the local gold and silver fields began to play out in the Carson City area, mintages also fell at the Mint. The flood of gold and silver began to slow by 1890 and it was evident that the San Francisco Mint could handle the Nevada mine output demands safely. Hence, the mintage for this 1890 Carson City half eagle came in at 53,800. Most entered circulation as intended, and very few were saved in mint condition. Here is a very pleasant example of this date, with satiny gold luster throughout, and the devices are sharply struck except for the upper curls on Liberty's head and the eagle's neck feathers, which are slightly weak. Under normal handling conditions, these Carson City half eagles are found bagmarked and nicked. However, this particular coin is very well preserved and retains smooth, unblemished fields and surfaces. Rare thus, as PCGS has only graded 27 this high, with 2 coins graded higher of the date. An important offering for the CC specialist (PCGS # 8376) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Realized $8,913
