Septimius Severus, 193-211 AD, & Julia Domna. AE 36 mm. of Stratonikeia, Caria, c. 208-212 AD. Rare. Confronted busts of Septimius, laureate, draped and cuirassed, and Julia Domna, draped, with inscription around; above, small oval countermark with helmeted Athena head right, below, rectangular counterstamp with Greek inscription of four letters: retrograde C, EPT(?). Reverse: Hekate standing facing, head left, holding patera and torch, dog at her feet. Von Aulock 2675; SNG Cop 507; cf. Howgego 188 and 536 for countermarks. Crusty green and black patina, but portraits quite pleasant. Very Fine plus.
