Lot 1240

Ancient Judea. City Coins of Israel, c. 2nd-3rd century AD. Lot of Twelve Small and Medium AE's. For the area specialist, lot well worth looking into. A varied group of scarce to rare, and perhaps unpublished coins. Included are Aelia Capitolina, an AE 25 mm.: Confronted busts of M. Aurelius and L. Verus / Tyche enthroned left (SNG ANS 603, 604). From Caesarea, another AE 25: Laureate bust of Aurelius right / Serapis bust right (SNG ANS 776); and another of Severus Alexander?: Draped, laureate bust right / Victory advancing left. From Bostra, three small bronzes: Aurelius as Caesar(?), Bare head right / Tyche head right (cf. SNG ANS 1188, 1190), and another a bit larger, but cuirassed (SNG ANS 1189); plus a handsome small AE 12 mm. of Commodus: Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Tyche bust right (SNG ANS 1194). An AE 10 mm. from Sepphoris(?), perhaps Commodus: Youthful draped bust right / Date palm Greek inscription below. From Ascalon, an AE 23 of Trajan: Laureate head right / Tyche stands left, dove behind (cf. SNG ANS 707ff.). And two uncertain city AE's: an AE 21 mm., Laureate male and female jugate busts right / Upright palm branch within wreath; and an AE 9 mm., Draped female bust right / Upright palm branch. And lastly two coins of Agrippa II: Domitian bust right / Nike left (Hendin 592); Domitian head right / Wreath (Hendin 634). Aelia Capitolina coin cleaned, rest with generally pleasing green, brown, or dark patinas. Lot of 12 coins. Coins average Fine to Very Fine; a few better.
