Lot 1152

1864. Lincoln Reelection gold medal. R. W. Julian #PR-35. Proof 55 Light hairlines. Dies by Anthony C. Paquet, and struck in Proof. A lovely portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the obverse design shows only his bust against plain fields, the reverse states in bold letters: ABRAHAM LINCOLN/AN HONEST MAN/ THE CRISIS DEMANDS/ HIS RE-ELECTION/ 1864. Struck beginning in August 1864 and continuing into October of that year. Mint records reflect that 29 gold medals were struck, and seven hundred in silver. This particular one has a minor nick right of the date, and another in the obverse right field. An important and popular medal, engraved by one of the finest engravers of the time, and depicting the most written about president of all. Paquet's name is engraved on the lower truncation of Lincoln's bust. A rare opportunity for the specialist.
Estimated Value $900-UP.
