Lot 1151

1803. Half eagle Kettle token. EF-40. Extremely Fine 40. These pieces were made as brass gaming tokens by the Kettle firm of Birmingham, England and roughly copy the half eagle of 1803. On this particular one the name is still present to the right of the date. Dark patina over most of the coin, with lighter brass areas rubbed through on the upper devices. In the Judd book under appendix C and in the Pollack book on page 471.
No doubt these gaming tokens were popular with gamblers of the time, where even a small bet could resemble the current gold coins circulating in America.
Estimated Value $10 - 20.
From the Benson collection and purchased from Ira S. Reed on June 21, 1945 for $1.

Realized $81
