1865 Pattern Dollar. Copper, reeded edge. NGC graded Proof 64 Red & Brown. This one may actually be an R-7 as only 7 pieces have been graded between NGC and PCGS combined! The obverse depicts the familiar Seated Liberty design, with stars around and date below, while the reverse is the soon to be adapted With Motto over the eagle design. This trial coin made the rounds with a few others, and it was decided to change the master hubs to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in a long banner flying over the eagle on the reverse. No doubt the horrors of the soon to be completed Civil War had a lot to do with this addition, and the motto continues today on both our coinage and paper money issues. NGC has graded 1 this high in Brown, this specimen as PF-64 Red and Brown, and one coin higher as PF-65 Red and Brown. PCGS has graded four in all, one as PR-63 Brown, one as PR-63 Red and Brown, one as PR-64 Brown, and one better than all as PR-66 Red and Brown. An important pattern issue for the specialist or Seated dollar collector.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

Realized $10,350
