Lot 773

1859 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. PCGS graded Proof 61. The obverse design is the regular die for the seated quarter, but the reverse is really special, as it boasts a large complex eagle with wings spread, a shield over its breast, and the olive branch of peace in the dexter claw while the arrows of war remain in the sinister left claw. The arrows are very long and thin. Around the eagle is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR below. No real handling marks, just moderate hairlines which don't distract as much as the grade implies. A coin so rare that the grade actually doesn't matter all that much, as PCGS has graded only 5 coins of this pattern issue in various proof grades! A rare opportunity for the pattern specialist to buy one of the more beautiful and truly rare pattern issues.
Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,000.

Realized $3,450
