Seleukid Kingdom. Timarchos Silver Drachm (3.92 g), ca. 163-161 BC. Diademed head dof Timarchos r. Reverse: BAΣIΛEΩΣMEΓAΛOYTIMAPΧOY. Artemis standing, facing, holding bow and drawing arrow. Monogram in exergue. Ekbatana. SC 1591; OGC vol. 9 # 363; Sear 7009. Exceedingly Rare. Boldly struck in high relief, well centered with full legends, toned. Although somewhat porous, this is perhaps the finest known example! . Estimated Value $5,000 - UP
After the death of Antiochos IV Epiphanes, the usurper Timarchos claimed auteonomy from the Seleucids with the title of Great King. He ruled all the of Seleukeia on the Tigris and with the help of the Roman Senate he was recognized as the legitimate king in 162/1 BC. However, Demetrios I, his hated rival, marched against him, Timarchos was defeated and killed in Babylonia.
