Lot 1928

1856 Flying Eagle Cent. NGC graded Proof 65. This appears to be a Snow-3 variety, as there is no center dot, and the reverse leaf extends above the base of the C in CENT, but below the T for the right leaf. Research has shown these to be proof-like, and not actually proofs as indicated by NGC. The strike is very sharp, with full details on the eagle and the wreath. We note a few hairlines in the fields, but the surfaces are otherwise very nice indeed. The surfaces are toned a medium brown with mint color present near the devices. Always in strong demand, the 1856 Flying Eagle is the first issuance of the small cent, and they were struck in very limited quantities. NGC has graded 12 this high, with just 3 graded higher, making this one of the finest seen by that service.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 20,000.

Realized $13,225
