Pair of Royal Dux Bohemia Figurines. Early 20th century. Rustic Shepherd and Shepherdess, he is 12", she is 11½" tall. Both pieces have the requisite pink triangle impressed with "Royal Dux Bohemia" and the "E" impressed acorn, indicating production between 1900 and 1914. Additional marks on the shepherd: "351" (impressed) and "37" (painted -- probably the decorator's mark). Marks on the shepherdess: "352 / 67" (impressed) and "37" (painted). A minor scuff on the shepherd's arm and she lacks her crook, otherwise fine condition.
Royal Dux Bohemia produced some of the highest quality, most distinctive porcelain figures of the early 20th century and the pieces offered here are no exception. Delicately colored portrayals of a Classical shepherd and his lovely assistant, both clad in togas and sheepskin (hers a mite more revealing); the details and the decorator's artful use of matte and glossy finishes has resulted in lovely examples of the Dux craftsmen's skill.
