Lot 1559

Chilton, Robert Hall. Carte de visite matted and framed with wardate clipped signature to 9 x 13½". Bust portrait carte de visite (civilian clothes) mounted on ivory card with double line border. Very small pencil ID at bottom of image; slightly ragged edge at right side of image; very faint scattered foxing; one faint, small smudge at bottom edge of card. Overall, the carte de visite is in very good condition.
The clipped signature ("RH Chilton") was apparently removed from a larger document, as it reads "Reply forwarded & recommended By (illegible) Genl Lee Hdqrs anva RH Chilton Octr 25/62 (illegible)" There is minor toning at and near the edges, otherwise the signature clip is in very good condition. Chilton was serving as Lee's Assistant Adjutant General during 1862 and the illegible scrawl after his name is likely "AAG". Chilton and Lee had been friends for many years, but their names are most closely linked to modern audiences because Chilton wrote Special Order 191, what has become known as Lee's Lost Order.
Estimated Value $600 - 700.
