Set of 7 notes: 50 Pfennig, violet with red serial number, CU. 1 Mark, Olive green violet with prefix A, CU. 2 Marks, light brown, VF, 2 light folds. 5 Marks, dark brown, red serial number, VF, 1 light fold. 10 Marks, green, no watermark, VG, center fold starting to tear. 20 Marks, olive brown, one line under o in No, CU. $250 up.
Ray and Steve Feller write in Silent Witnesses: Civilian Camp Money of World War II: "In July, 1940, official Lodz Ghetto currency was issued in the form of Quittung, or receipts. They discouraged the Jews from buying goods from civilians on the other side of the fence, and they allowed the Nazis to take whatever they wanted from Jewish homes, exchanging it for the QUITTUNG."
