Ernest G. Hildner: Rare Signed First Day of Issue Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Basketball, Hildner a Player on that First Team. Ernest G. Hildner (1873-1968) was one of the original players of the very first basketball team, the sport invented by Dr. James Naismith at Springfield College in 1891. He was the youngest member of the basketball team and he was the last and oldest surviving member. November 6, 1961 marked the 100th Anniversary of the Birthplace of Basketball and Hildner has signed a First Day Cover postmarked in Springfield, Mass which introduced the Naismith 4¢ stamp recognizing his contribution and the unveiling of the opening of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on campus, sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Mint condition and rare, signature boldly signed in black fountain pen ink. Estimated Value $400 - 800
