Lot 570

1895 Barber Dime. PCGS graded Proof 67. Remarkably, this dime was put away in 1944 by Dr. Benson where it remained untouched for 56 years. When our own Larry Goldberg carefully removed these coins from their Wayte Raymond holders, the stunning colors were almost beyond belief. Coin after coin shows deep blue and gold toning, even on circulated examples, but the most dazzling colors are found on the proofs. We don't know what the coins looked like in 1944, but they sure look wonderful today. Pristine surfaces were carefully preserved, and many, such as this coin, are tied for the finest graded. PCGS notes 15 grade this high for 1895, with none graded higher. Worthy of the finest collection.
Estimated Value $2,300 - 2,700.
From the Benson collection and purchased from James Macallister on March 31, 1944 as part of a set from 1858 to 1915 for $195.00.

Realized $5,060
