Lot 32

1796 Liberty Cap Half Cent. With pole. . C-2. PCGS graded AU-55. One of the classic rarities of the half cent series, the 1796 is seldom offered and always expensive. Curiously many of the 1796 specimens known are either high grade, or very low grade, with few in between. Here is one of the nicest, a choice About Uncirculated coin that boasts even brown color and is decently struck. None of the usual copper problems are seen here, no porosity, no raised spots and no problem handling marks. Well struck for the date, although we note minor weakness on the center of Liberty's curls and at HALF CENT on the reverse, which is present although soft on some of the letters. Identifiable by a tiny tick in the field just left of the lowest curl point and a very shallow, minor scratch above the C of AMERICA. It would be hard to imagine a better coin, unless it was full red! A great example of this rarity.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 40,000.
