Lot 281

1917 Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-63. Here is an unusual coin, the obverse die had several die lines or file marks which were present when this one was struck. Note the long raised line through the RT of LIBERTY to the tip of the Indian's nose, another from the rim to his forehead, and two short raised lines extending above the lower feather, and another left of the left chord tying his hair. These tiny lines would soon be worn off the dies by the striking of many coins or by lapping the die, so this is apparently an early die state. Clean surfaces, and an interesting coin to study. We also note a tiny lamination on the Bison's rump, which is still attached but starting to pull away from the surface of the coin.
Estimated Value $80 - 100.
From the Benson Collection and purchased on October 3, 1944 from Ira S. Reed in a set of nickels from 1913 to 1938 for $350.00.

Realized $173
