Lot 1192

1803 Draped Bust Dollar. Small 3. PCGS graded AU-50. Good luster and well struck on all but a few of the left obverse stars. This one has a bisecting obverse die crack through the R of LIBERTY to between the 18 of the date. In the color department, this one is quite choice, with blue near the edges and abundant gold in the fields. Clean for the grade, with no surface disturbances, the only mark worth describing is a rim nick just right of the eagle's tail. There is a trivial planchet streak up into the field through the first two stars on the obverse. One of several really choice bust dollars offered in the Benson collection, we hope all collectors can obtain at least one of these memorable toned coins for their collections, and wish we had even more to sell. This is Bowers die state III, and probably in the top dozen of the variety, although this is speculative until further research is done to bring the Condition Census more up to date.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
From the Benson collection and purchased privately from B. Max Mehl on May 4, 1946 for $32.50.

Realized $5,750
