Lot 95

Three Iconic Photos and a Film of the Japanese Surrender. Four Items: (1) 8 x 10" color photo of the Marine Corps War Memorial, signed "Herschel W. Williams /Medal of Honor / Iwo Jima / Feb. 23, 1945." Williams won his medal for actions "above and beyond the call of duty" on the same day Joe Rosenthal took the iconic, Pulitzer Prize-winning photo of the flag-raising on Mt. Suribachi. The memorial, sculpted by Felix de Weldon and dedicated to all U.S. Marine Corps personnel who died in the defense of the United States since 1775, was inspired by Rosenthal's photo. With PSA/DNA COA. (2) Two copies of Alfred Eisenstaedt's Times Square V-J Day photo of American sailor George Mendonsa (who passed away on Feb. 18, 2019) grabbing nurse Greta Zimmer, a stranger, and laying a big smooch on her. One photo, with an 11/05/12 date-stamp on the back, is signed "Times Square / George Mendonsa" in black marker; with a COA from the UK. The other photo is simply signed "George Mendonsa" in red marker; with JSA cert sticker. (3) Original 16mm Castle Films movie of "Japan's Surrender!" In the original red, white, and blue box.
