State of Maine Civil War Certificate Printed Signature of Joshua Chamberlain and John Caldwell. Original Civil War Volunteer certificate issue to a Wilmot Blake. (No date) Certificate is illustrated with circular portraits of Chamberlain, Grant with five vignette war scenes, bold and clear inked signature of Chamberlain but is a facsimile as is General John Caldwell from a steel engraving. 13 x 16 certificate was framed, then mounted in a plexglass box. Overall toning an one chip to border. 13 x 16" framed to 19 x 21"
Also included is a selection of Civil War era newspapers in excellent condition. Papers from this time were made of rag paper and their surprising hardiness make them easy to read and handle. Full Section from Springfield Republican December 19, 1861 with the "Latest News of Mr. Sumner presenting a petition for the emancipation of slaves with compensation to loyal master and Mr. Wiley of Va. presenting a petition that the existing war forced upon the country by states in rebellion, without provocation, was intended to destroy the Union.
