Four (4) Kachinas, "Horse", "Prickley Pear", "Drow Mother" and a Spectacular Eagle Dancer by Joseph Duwyenie, Entirely of Wood. Four fine Kachinas all about 12" in height, all signed and beautifully crafted.
1.) "Eagle Dancer" by Joseph Duwyenie carver of some 50 years known for his exacting wood details clearly evident in his carving of feathers. The outspread eagle feathers along the arms are each carved from a single section of wood. the balance of the feathers are thin, hand cut and painted pieces beautifully done.
The eagle dancer plays a role in many Native American spiritual ceremonies. For the Hopi and other Pueblo tribes, the eagle dances frequently as he carries messages to the gods. The eagle may dance for rain, a good harvest, blessings on a family and healing.
2.) "Horse" Kachina by Dorothy Kayaditto, especially nice given the leather loin cloth and fringe painted and accented with beads which contrasts perfectly against the fur and feathers. Signed under base.
3.) "Prickly Pear Cactus" Kachina dancer with prickly pear pads hanging from staff, artist unknown
4.) "Crow Mother" by the artis 'R' The Crow Mother appears during the ceremony known as the Powamu. The Powamu ceremony takes place after the second moon prior to the Spring Solstice, a festival celebrating bean planting. The strength imbued in this carving is clearly apparent.
