Hellman, Lillian; Autographed Letter Signed with a Very Pithy, Amusing Close to the Letter. Addressee Indecipherable But Someone Close (1905-1984) American author, playwright and screenwriter whose works proved extremely popular. Later she did find herself in controversy regarding some of her claims in life as well as blacklisted during the HUAC hearings but her dramatic works are still highly regarded which include "The Little Foxes" which she received an Oscar for adapting her own novel, "Watch on the Rhine" "The Children's Hour" and more. Hellman was also of note having a 30+ year relationship with Dashiell Hammett likely one of the greatest detective novelists of the time ("The Thin Man" and "The Maltese Falcon") who likewise was blacklisted by HUAC.
Letter is to someone indecipherable (male) thanking him for a recording of the "Goldberg Variations" by Bach and closes with the following. "You are the only loving man who ever thought there was anything admirable about me when I was angry. Therefore, it seems mandatory now that you get a divorce and marry me. Please attend to it quickly…" If the addressee is a nickname for Hammett we cannot be sure. But certainly a great letter of her wit. 8 x 6" beautifully framed with photo 13 x 17".
