19th Century Authors: Collection of 25 Signatures and Letters Including: Tennyson, Thackeray, George Sand, William Godwin, Nobokov Sr. Very nice collection of authors/writers of the 19th Century both US and abroad:
Alfred Lord Tennyson celebrated English poet, a fine cut signature. George Sand note in French cleanly written. Anne Isabella (Lady Noel Byron) salutation and signature from cut letter. John Howard Payne bottom section of letter with his handwriting on recto and verso as well as his signature (fragile). William M. Thackery full hand written note signed. 3 X William C. Bryant, nine lines written on half sheet and signed on both sides plus photo signed on verso as William Cullen Bryant as well as a signature. John Whittier excellent autograph and his handwriting on a cover. On back of Whitter's signature is that of Henry Wilson, VP to Grant. Francis Scott Key (Star Spangled Banner) six lines lifted from a legal document in his handwriting but no signature. Julia Ward Howe (Battle Hymn of the Republic) cut salutation and signature plus an autograph manuscript signed dated 1871. Vladimir Dimitrie Nabokov, ALS in English signed, father of Russian/American author, but a criminalogist and journalist who was killed trying to thwart an assassination. Oliver Wendell Holmes, poet, humorist and medical researcher and essayist, ALS informing an English correspondent that a printed account of a trip is thoroughly false. Joel Chandler Harris cut signature with his address at the time. Horace Greeley ALS on Tribune letterhead plus addressed cover. Lord T. B. Macauly historian, cut signature. Samuel Lover cut signature, novelist and painter. William Howitt cut signature, English Quaker writer. Whitlaw Reid TLS, journalist, diplomat and editor of the Tribune. James Lowell, ALS regarding cropping out a part of his best known work "The Cathedral". Joe Grego, three ALS all to Fred Kitton. Cora S. Wheeler poet and author autograph card. On verso an autograph by Lydia Maria Child with a beautiful inscription. 7 more writers included.
