Durer, Albert (Albrecht Dürer). Beheading of Saint John The Baptist. (1471-1528) German High Renaissance painter later known for his incredible Gothic woodcuts of the late 15th early 16th Century and considered a revolutionary of the medium. His images are so familiar in modern culture with most not knowing the artist. His works taken from stories in the Bible are a marvel having extraordinary detail and movement. The stories are biblical but the settings 16th Century as clearly evident in this etching with the the clothing and architecture. Engraving as examined in frame has been trimmed flush and mounted on larger paper and then again mounted on a much larger sheet at least a hundred + years past. Actual engraving measures 7 5/8 x 5.25" and matted and framed to 18 x 14". Engraving boasts deep blacks overall even toning and Durer's monogram is clearly visible on the block. We note in bottom right corner a small bit of paper loss that was colored in black pencil on the paper backing the engraving. A bit clumsy but does disguise well enough. Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500
