Sale 128

Lot 626

$5 National Bank Note. Farmers and Mechanics NB of Hartford, CT. Ch. 1321. Fr. 403. PMG Choice Fine 15 Net. Severed & Reattached, Foreign Substance. This was the eighth bank to have been granted a charter in the state capital by June of 1865. The vast majority of notes known are Aces, with this being the only First Charter Five known, and was last seen in a 1998 CAA sale. A large tear starts at lower left and extends up to the charter number, and at some point had tape covering it, along with a couple of other small tears and a small repair. This is still a very presentable note that still retains the pen signatures of William Smith as Cashier and Alva Oatman as President. Estimated Value $750 - UP
